Frequently Asked Questions about Drain Relining

The drain relining process involves the installation of a drain lining that bonds to the inside of the pipe, essentially creating a pipe within a pipe. The lining, usually made from flexible resin, goes through the pipework either using an inflated airbag to shape the lining to the internal walls, winched in, or forced into place using water pressure.

Before drains are relined, we use drain jetting to ensure the drains have a clean and even surface so the lining can fully attach to the pipe. Drain jetting involves shooting high-pressure water through the drainage system to clear the drains of any blockages or dirt which could prevent the lining from fully attaching to the pipe.

Drain relining begins with a thorough inspection of the drain using CCTV cameras to assess the extent of the damage. Once the assessment is complete, the drain is cleaned and cleared of any debris or obstructions. A liner, usually made of epoxy resin, is impregnated onto a flexible material and inserted into the drain. The liner is then inflated, allowing it to conform to the shape of the existing pipe. Once in place, the liner is cured using hot water, steam, or UV light, creating a solid and durable pipe within the old one.

While drain relining can repair various types of pipe damage, it may not be suitable for all situations. Drain relining is generally effective for cracks, fractures, joint displacements, and minor root intrusion. However, severely collapsed pipes or those with extensive damage may require excavation and replacement.

Drain relining is suitable for a wide range of drain types, including:

  • Sewer drains
  • Stormwater drains
  • Domestic drains
  • Industrial drains
  • Commercial drains
  • Vertical stack pipes
  • Culverts and tunnels

No, a CCTV drainage survey is a non-intrusive method that doesn’t require digging or excavation. It minimises disruption to your property and allows for a thorough inspection of the drainage system without causing significant damage.
